How to use it
- 1 Add your PDFs. Drag the PDFs onto the box, or tap choose files. You can add up to 5 files, 50 MB in total. Each file shows its page count once it's read.
- 2 Set the order. Use the up and down arrows next to each file. The file at the top goes first in the merged PDF. The cross removes a file.
- 3 Merge. Tap Merge. The button shows how many readable PDFs will be joined.
- 4 Download. When it says Done, tap Download to save merged.pdf, then rename it to something the recipient will recognize.
This tool lets you merge PDF files without uploading them anywhere. Use it to put a signed contract back together with its attachments, join two halves of a scan, or send one tidy file instead of 6 separate ones.
How it works
Each PDF in the list is read on your device and its pages are copied, in order, into a new file. File 1’s pages come first, then all of file 2’s, and so on. Nothing is redrawn or recompressed, so text you could select before is still selectable and scanned pages keep their resolution.
The list shows each file’s page count as soon as it’s read, which is a quick check that you added the right version. The download is called merged.pdf.
Privacy: your files stay in the browser
A merge tool sees everything in the documents you give it. Here, that’s only your own browser. The PDFs are opened in memory in your tab, joined there and handed back as a download, without a round trip to a server.
That’s the same reason people look for a desktop or offline merge: contracts, bank statements and medical letters don’t belong in a stranger’s upload folder. Once the page has loaded, nothing about your files leaves your device.
Limits
- 5 PDFs and 50 MB in total per merge. The page tells you if a file would push you over. For bigger jobs, merge in rounds.
- Password-protected PDFs aren’t supported. They’re flagged in the list and left out; the rest still merge.
- You need at least 2 readable files. A damaged file shows “Couldn’t read this PDF” and is skipped.
- Bookmarks don’t carry over. The pages and their content do, but the outline panel some PDFs have (the clickable table of contents in the sidebar) isn’t copied. Fillable form fields may stop being fillable, so fill forms before you merge.
Tips
Name things before you merge. The list follows the order you add files. If they’re named 1-contract.pdf, 2-annex.pdf, picking them in one go usually lands them in the right order.
Merge, then trim. If one of the files has a cover page or a blank page you don’t want, merge first and then use the split PDF tool to extract only the pages you need. Typing a range like 1-4, 6- drops page 5.
Watch the size for email. Merging 5 scanned documents can produce a file too big for an attachment. The compress PDF tool shows the before and after size, so you’ll know if it fits.
Merging scans from your phone? If the pages started as phone scans, it’s often easier to scan them into one document in the first place. The multi-page scanning guide shows how to add pages to an existing scan.
On your phone
In Scanpaper, merging is free on iPhone and Android: select documents in the list and tap Merge, or use Merge PDFs on the Tools tab, including PDFs you’ve brought in from the Files app. Afterwards, the pages grid lets you drag pages into a new order or delete the ones you don’t need. The free tier holds up to 3 documents, and its PDFs carry a small “Scanned with Scanpaper” line in one corner.
Frequently asked questions
Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?
No. The files are read and joined by code running in your browser tab, and the merged PDF is saved straight back to your device. Nothing is sent anywhere, so there's nothing stored that you'd need to delete later.
Why does a file say 'Password-protected: not supported'?
The PDF is encrypted, and the tool can't open encrypted files. Remove the password in the app that set it (you'll need the password), save an unlocked copy, and add that copy instead. The other files in the list can still be merged without it.
Does merging change the quality of the pages?
No. Pages are copied as they are, so text stays selectable and scans keep their resolution. The merged file is usually about the size of the originals added together.
How many PDFs can I merge at once?
Up to 5 PDFs per merge, with a 50 MB total. For more, merge the first batch, then merge that result with the next batch.
Can I merge PDFs offline?
The merge itself happens on your device, which is usually why people look for an offline option: they don't want the files on someone's server. You do need the page to load first, so open it while you're connected.
