PDF password and app lock

Put a password on the PDFs you send, and a PIN on the app that holds them. Two locks for documents you'd rather nobody else opened.

Scans tend to be the documents people care most about: IDs, tax forms, medical letters, contracts. Scanpaper keeps them on the phone with no account and no cloud, and these two features cover the moments when that isn’t enough on its own.

PDF password

A password-protected PDF can’t be opened without the password, whichever app or computer it ends up on. It’s the lock that travels with the file.

  1. Open the document and tap More.
  2. Tap Set Password and enter the password.
  3. Share or export as usual. Anyone opening the exported PDF will need the password.

A protected document shows a small lock next to its page count in your list, so you can see which ones are set. To take the password off, choose Remove Password from the same menu.

Some habits that make it worth doing:

  • Send the password a different way. If the PDF goes by email, send the password by text or say it on a call.
  • Use a password the recipient can type. Long is good; ambiguous characters like l and 1 cause failed attempts.
  • Check what the recipient accepts. Some upload portals reject encrypted PDFs. If a form won’t take it, send an unprotected copy through the official upload page instead.
  • Pair it with a watermark on ID copies. A watermark (also Pro) such as “For rental application only” stays on the page even after the password has been typed in.

App lock

App lock protects the library itself, for the times your phone is unlocked in someone else’s hands.

  • Set a 4-digit PIN in Settings or from App Lock on the Tools tab.
  • Turn on Face ID or Touch ID if you’d like to open it without typing the PIN.
  • Scanpaper asks for the PIN when it starts, and again after it has been in the background for more than 30 seconds.

You can change the PIN or turn app lock off from the same screen.

What stays the same without Pro

Even without these locks, scans never leave the phone unless you share them. There’s no sign-up, so there’s no account to break into and no cloud folder where copies pile up.

Questions

How do I password-protect a PDF in Scanpaper?

Open the document, tap More, then Set Password, and type the password. Anyone opening the exported PDF will need it. Send the password separately from the file, for example by text if the PDF goes by email.

Can I remove the password later?

Yes. Open the document, tap More and choose Remove Password. Future exports of that document won't ask for one.

What happens if I forget my app lock PIN?

Write the PIN down somewhere safe when you set it. Your scans are stored only on the phone, with no account or cloud copy, so there's no online reset that could open them for you.

Are app lock and PDF passwords free?

Both are part of Scanpaper Pro, which has a free trial. Scans themselves are always kept on your phone, on the free tier too.

Scan it once, keep it forever

Scanpaper finds the page edges, straightens it and saves a clean PDF. Search the text inside, sign, and share. No account, nothing uploaded.
